Pedal for Polio – District 5130 Rotarians

From August 12th to August 19th we had the privilege of being in the company of 14 Rotarian’s riding their bikes from Crescent City  California all the way to Petaluma.  The journey would take us over 300 miles and would take 6 days.  The dedicated cadre of Rotarian bike riders, as well as those who followed in the SAG wagons had a common goal,”End Polio Now!”  The money raised was matched 2:1 by fellow Rotarians, Bill and Melinda Gates.  On Days 5&6 other riders joined us and more than 30 rode into the finish line in Petaluma.  We proudly share some of the insights of this ride with you in the following videos.  We will also include the highlights video that has been posted on the Petaluma Rotary channel.

Coit Tower Suspense, San Francisco Views, Murals, Money & Mystery

Coit Tower – a monument filled with suspense. From any perspective it’s a beautiful view of San Francisco and a must for tourists and sightseers. Lillie Hitchcock Coit led a fascinating life in challenging times. And while her parents and husband were wealthy, at a young age she experienced the ravages of a fire that almost took her life. This led Lillie to be a lifelong champion of firefighters, who also bonded with her and let her accompany them on fire calls and attend their parades. After her husband’s long illness and demise, Lillie distant cousin and business advisor tried to take her life, instead leading to the demise of the man trying to defend her. Yet in her later years when she moved to Europe to avoid the impression of a scandal and the Great Depression hit hard, she thoughtfully bequest 1/3 of her estate to beautify the City she loved. But wait, there’s more shenanigans and skulduggery with the City of San Francisco so tune in for “the rest of the story!”

cTv Model Boat Building Contest – Regent Mariner Cruise Ship

On our last day at sea from San Diego to San Francisco, at long last it’s time for our model ship building contest aboard the Regent Mariner cruise ship. Using nothing more than found, begged, borrowed or _____ items that we gathered on our cruise, we were definitely ready to compete in the high seas (well, at least in the Jacuzzi and choppy swimming pool waters). So bring on the judges assessment of our engineering and design, bring on the popular audience vote… or at least we THOUGHT we were all good to go. Then life happens 😉

cTv RV Life – Playing in Old Town Sacramento, California

In downtown Sacramento after seeing the Capitol and Crocker Art Museum, we topped off the day enjoying the good life in Old Sacramento – This town came to life during the “Gold Rush” days and after a major face lift in the 1960’s it was listed as a National Historic Landmark District.  Find out about the Pony Expresses and much more in our latest video. A great place to divert from traditional RV Life and shop, play, eat and dine with fellow tourists.

cTv RV Life – Enjoy secrets of California State Capitol in Sacramento

On our return trips from the Sierras, we dropped by our California State Capitol located at Sacramento (last of 6 locations over 150 years). Outside, the memorial ground dedications and Vietnam statuary are beyond description and inside, be sure to check out the library. We also enjoyed the memorial commemorating Father Junipero Serra who led the quest to support native indigenous Americans with California Missions. In a future video we will highlight the 58 marquee displays featuring interesting tidbids for each of our California Counties.

cTv RV Life, Guess Who Gets Engaged at Visalia?

Heading home after our 18 day trip, we leave Bakersfield to swing by… Visalia (?) of all places.  Could we be making a sidetrip to the Sequoia National Redwood Forest? (nope)  So it turns out Grace has a “special” engagement party planned with…(stay tuned).  Also, while we enjoyed our overnight stays at a handful of Elks Lodges during our trip, at 5:45 we point out a potential downside as we witnessed at Bakersfield (yet great folks inside the Club!)
